Carpentry & Built-Ins
A joiner is a carpenter who makes fitted woodwork. Built-ins, trim, cabinets, shelving and custom pieces measured and cut for your house, not bought off a shelf.
This is the work the name comes from. A joiner is a carpenter who builds fitted woodwork — pieces cut to the room rather than bought to fit it. It is also the part of a punch list most handymen quietly decline, because a built-in that is out by an eighth of an inch reads as wrong from across the room.
Most of the jobs on this page started as a photo and a rough idea. A half wall that needed to double as a dog gate. A bar top that had to line up with an existing counter. A wall of reclaimed plank that had to sit flat over drywall that was not flat. The measuring and the layout are the job; the cutting is the easy part.
Furniture repair belongs here too. One customer had a 130-year-old brass bed they had been told was beyond fixing, plus a broken chair. Both went back into service.

Common questions
Do you build from a drawing, or do I need plans?
A photo, a measurement and a description of what you want it to do is usually enough. For anything structural or unusual we will talk the layout through on site before anything is cut.
Can you match existing trim in an older house?
Often, yes. Older profiles are frequently still available or can be built up from two stock pieces. Send a photo of the end grain and a measurement across the face.
